An introductory chapter discusses the role of prevention, how to use the curriculum model, identifying students at risk for drug use, and integrating curricula and materials. It also provides guideline for curriculum presentation and evaluation. Thereafter, the curriculum model is divided into four grade clusters: K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12, and each grade cluster is treated in four sections: (1) a background for teachers discussing children's developmental stages and including information on children's beliefs, behaviors, and susceptibilities to using drugs; (2) suggestions for working with parents to keep them informed about what their children are learning in class; (3) suggestions for working with the community to create awareness and support for the schools' prevention efforts; and (4) lesson plans and activities. Each lesson plan specifies a learning objective, background activities with directions for presentation, needed resources, and teacher tips, all geared to a specific grade level range and subject area. Some lesson plans are accompanied by activity pages that may be reproduced for classroom use. The curriculum model also includes information on drugs and their effects and a list of resources for information and for further curriculum development. (TE)
